Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is the use of real time EEG readings to help train the brain to work more effectively. In relatively simplistic terms, neurofeedback measure brainwaves that occur in the brain, finds out when they are not at the right speed and help the brain learn how to adjust the speed to a more appropriate level. The speed at which these brainwaves occur has been linked to multiple issues including ADHD, Anxiety, Insomnia, Depression, Panic, and PTSD.

Why do the speed of brainwaves matter?

There are several different types of brainwaves, delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma. Each of the aformentioned brainwaves is listed in order from slowest to fastest. If I am looking to relax or sleep and my brain is communicating in beta, or fast active waves, I could feel extremely tense or be up all night. In contrast, if I am trying to focus intently in class and figure out a difficult problem and my brain is communicating in theta or alpha, I will likely lose focus and either feel out of it or disinterested. The later is what is typically seen in ADHD, with the child or adult feeling disinterested and looking for more activity or stimuli to speed things up and match the level of stimulation to the task. Brainwaves are certainly more complex than this, but that is where neurofeedback comes in. With strong clinical assessment the clinician examines the areas the client wishes to change, assess the clients curernt functioning, determines a neurofeedback protocol catered to the individuals, and monitors and adjusts based on outcomes.
